Norberto Santiago Pridetime Reporter For the first time in 6 years the Field Hockey team made states Wednesday night against the winless St. Joe’s. They won with a score of 2-1 with goals by Marianna Veranjo (‘21) and Julia Bale (‘21). They finished their regular season with a 5-8-0-2 mark to clinch a spot.
McMahon didn't score in the first half, but when the second half started, that's when the Senators got rolling with a goal from Veranjo, who scored on a penalty corner less than three minutes into the second half. By then, the Senators were winning 1-0. Seventeen minutes later, St. Joe’s came back to tie with a goal by Sophie Jones. “This team will play until that sound of the final buzzer goes off,” McMahon Coach Dani Brown said. “That’s part of their mentality. Nobody says it’s over except for the buzzer.” With five minutes left, the girls came back to reclaim their lead with a goal by Julia Bale (‘21) who was assisted by Brooke Thill (‘21). “It was really intense, but we all came together and we all worked so hard for this,” said Bale. “It wasn’t just me. It was a total team effort. We all got that goal and I’m just really proud of all of us.” With wins over Finch, Shelton, Ludlowe, Trumbull, Stamford, and St. Joe’s, McMahon is ready for the next step into states.
