A
s the sun begins to set earlier and temperatures drop, anticipation for Spooky Season reaches its peak. Although some believe the magic of this season to have gone out the window as soon as they stopped trick-or-treating, there’s still so much more to this time of year. Whether you're the one handing treats out now or you’ve made unique traditions of your own, there’s much more that makes this time of year as memorable as it is.

As children, it’s likely that we all got excited this time of year about one thing: trick-or-treating. We counted the days down until the 31st of the month. We all dressed up in our very best costumes, pretending to be our favorite superheroes and characters.

“I would get so excited about dressing up. When I was younger, all of my siblings and I coordinated our costumes. It was the best thing,” McMahon student Pamela Reinoso (‘20) recalled.

Just because we may not all go trick-or-treating anymore doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy Spooky Season as we did in our younger years. We can still partake in the same excitement we used to as children by making new traditions for ourselves. In fact, it’s likely that we already have.

We can still partake in the same excitement we used to as children by making new traditions for ourselves. In fact, it’s likely that we already have.

Maybe you still go trick-or-treating, or maybe you’re the one handing out the candy now. Perhaps you’ve made it tradition to watch scary movies and binge on candy, or carve pumpkins and go to haunted houses. It’s quite possible that you’re just like McMahon junior Marianna Cundari, who uses Halloween night to make the best memories she can with her friends.

“It’s current tradition to hang out with my three friends. We bring all different

foods and order pizza and bake cupcakes and just have fun together.”

It’s also very possible that you just don’t celebrate Halloween at all. Or that you did as a child but now it’s just a day of the year filled with nostalgia. Regardless, as the weather sets in alongside the scent of all things fall, there’s an undeniable sense of excitement in the air that’s noticeable to anyone. It can’t be better said than by Marianna Cundari (‘20):

“My favorite thing about the season now is the air. The weather gets colder and it’s just nice eating sugary foods while having fun with friends.”

As October progresses, we should all make traditions of our own, whether they be big or small, Halloween-related or not. Spend time with your friends and eat all the candy you want. Watch your favorite horror movies and go pumpkin picking. After all, Spooky Season only lasts so long.
