71% of students send or receive text messages on their cell phones in class every day, said study by The Pew Research Center. With this generation, it is highly likely that about 90% of students in high school bring their phones to class every day. This means that many students are sending and receiving text messages throughout the school day. And don’t forget about the amount of Snapchats taken and Instagram pictures posted on social media during the day. Thus, in order to have a productive learning environment, cell phones should be prohibited during class.
Phones are a major distraction to the students in class. When you look around a classroom nowadays, you will find countless students on their phones and ignoring the teacher. By giving them the opportunity to use their phones, there is no certainty that students will give their full attention to the teacher. Students are easily distracted from their learning by texting and using their social media. Despite having the ability to block certain websites on the school's computers, the school does not have the power to block websites on student’s phones. There is no way for the faculty to monitor the student's actions online while they are in school. This enables students to go on inappropriate sites and not focus on anything productive.
Phones also plays a part in the cyber bullying. Cyber bullying occurs both inside and outside of school, and has a negative impact on a student's confidence and effects if they are comfortable in the school environment. In fact, about 25% of High School students have reported that they have experienced repeated bullying by their cellphone, or the Internet (nobullying.com). When cellular devices are brought to class and used freely, students can be sending text messages around to their friends about another student, and rumors start to spread fast. Additionally, because of the rise of social media, more and more students are being affected by cyberbullying and more and more are cyber bullying others. This faster form of bullying makes the school a more dangerous environment for all students. Allowing students to use phones in school encourages them that they can do anything they wanted online.
It is often argued that phones can help a child’s education. However, cell phones also can have a negative affect and hurt a child’s education. Many parents want their children to have their phones on them just in case of an emergency. However, if there is a real emergency, the parents should call the school instead to inform the student. It isn’t that important, that you as a parent, should interrupt your child’s education. Students should be allowed to carry their cell phones in school, but they should only be used during period breaks or after school is over. Others argue that cellphones can be useful to access the internet. Admittedly, that is true, but there are libraries, chrome books, and textbooks that the school supplies all students.
Around the world, many kids can’t afford to go to school and have to stay home without a proper education. Attending school is a privilege. And having your phone out and looking at Snapchat is not the priority when you walk into the front doors of McMahon.

The Divergent series is based on the young adult novels by Veronica Roth. The trilogy is about a dystopian society in which everyone is split up between factions based on your personality. Tris Prior has taken the test to see which faction she belongs too, but she is told that she is divergent. Divergent means that you have the ability to fit into multiple factions, which is very rare. People in this society do not like divergents, they are afraid of them. The whole series is about how Tris lives as a Divergent and how she tries to change society.
The most recent movie that has come out from the divergent series is the third installment: Allegiant. This past weekend Allegiant made only $29 million. This is a big drop in sales for the Divergent series. The two previous movies made more than $52 million in their opening weekend.
This sudden drop in sales for the Divergent series have many people wondering if this is a sign that people are starting to get sick of dystopian young adult films. So far in the movie industry there has been many dystopian movies made in the past couple of years. To name a few there are, The Hunger Games, The Maze Runner series and The Giver.
I get that we have seen so many of these films that sometimes even I have times where I get sick of them. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Hunger Games and The Giver. These films have pretty much the same plot and there is always a savior or someone who is just different that can help save society. I think that is good because it shows young kids that being different is actually something good and to not be so ashamed of yourself. Maybe people are just looking for something different.
I honestly I love the Divergent Series. The first two movies I thought were good and I’m still waiting to see the recent one. In one of my classes I asked my friends if any of them have watched the most recent Divergent movie and one of them actually did. She is a junior in the school and she told me, “I don’t think you should go see it. It’s honestly a waste of money. It’s not a bad movie, but it’s just not as good as the other two.” What she said did actually surprised me because I didn’t think it would be so bad. Maybe that is why the sales dropped for Allegiant.
The pilot of Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt starts off with four women surrounding a small Christmas tree singing "Merry Christmas." A group of FBI agents barge into the bunker that they were in and pulled them out. The women were scared and didn’t understand what was happening because they were told that an apocalypse had occurred and everyone outside of the bunker was dead.
The pilot continues with the women getting cleaned up and going to New York City for their first interview on live TV. Elle Kemper, starring as Kimmy Schmidt, Sara Chase, starring as Cydnee Pokorny, Lauren Adams, starring as Gretchen Chalker, and Sol Miranda, starring as Donna Maria Nunez, all speak on how they feel now that they are free and what would their next steps in life will be. Kimmy, Cydnee, and Gretchen all have only a middle school education and were tricked into going in the bunker. Donna was the only volunteer in this whole thing. She felt the preacher had a good plan and wanted to join him.
As the women left the interview, they got into a van to head back to their hometown. Kimmy stops the van and states how she doesn’t want to go back because she will be treated as a victim and that’s not what she wants.
The episode continues as Kimmy finds a roommate, Titus Andromedon, played by Tituss Burgess, and tries to adapt to living in New York.
From viewing the pilot, the show seems that it will be very comical and enjoyable. I would consider it a realistic drama comedy. It contains some truthfulness on how society views victims and how they are treated and also people finding their identity and finding out who they are. I recommend this to young adults going off to college in need of a light laugh.
Top 5 Ways To Get Ready For Your Permit Test
When you turn 16, you're ready to take on the road. Or try to at least. Before you get your driver's license though, you have to pass your permit test. The written part of the exam is usually 20 questions long, and even though it doesn't seem like a lot, it's imperative you study for it.
Money Watch, a CBS News segment, did a survey of 500 people and reported 44% of them didn’t receive a passing score of the written exam. Reports from CarInsurance.com also claim that 56% could get the average score on the written exam. Using these tips may help you become one of the 56%.
One great way to study for your permit is to take practice exams. Practice exams let you prepare and get a better feel for the actual test. If you take it online, you can also get quick and easy feedback on questions you get wrong. Another benefit of practice exams, is that you can take it as many times as you want at no cost. A great website to go to is Driving-Tests.org.
For visual learners, a great way is to watch videos on YouTube. Something most people have trouble doing while driving is parallel parking. You could watch different videos on how to do it the right way and learn other things you'll get tested on.
Involving other people can also benefit you. Have friends and family members quiz you from the manual or join a study group. They can help you in areas you need help with. Studying with others will also help you focus more so that you can know these facts. It's good to also ask questions to people who just took the test, so you can know what to expect.
The fourth way is just to learn, a lot. I'm not saying stay up all hours studying or until your head hurts, but make sure you know the facts. With the test being 20 questions, you don't have a lot of answers you could get wrong. But they may also give trick questions or ask a question indirectly resulting in confusion. You want to be confident taking the test. And the best way is to read, study the facts, and know your facts.
Finally, have a positive attitude. I know the last tip probably made you nervous but don't be. Keep Calm and Be Mo Positive. The worst thing you can do is to have anxiety before the test. Try to schedule the test early and do yoga, or other non stressful activities. You may also want to exercise and eat a good breakfast to get your juices flowing. Don't over stress it.
There's this person that I dated freshman year. He moved schools and we lost touch after we broke up. Recently however, he managed to contact me yet again, and now he's asking to get back together. What I have an issue with here is that I'm not sure if I should. Yes, I have feelings for him, but we've changed so much since then. We're both Juniors now by the way. I'd like to say he's the perfect guy for me but then again, he's gotten into a lot of trouble since freshman year. I do want to meet up with him to test the waters, but I'm worried that he's just not going to be the same guy I had feelings for. What should I do Alice?
This is a question that a lot of people struggle finding the answer to. To be honest, there is no definite answer to that question. Every situation is different and there are always different opinions. One friend may say give him a chance, another may act like Cee Lo Green and say “forget him.”
There are ten questions you should ask yourself in this situation, according to the article 10 Questions You Should Ask Before You Date Your Ex, on the personal advisor website, Keen. These are a few that apply to your situation.
One, how long have you been separated? Two, what was the reason you broke up? Third, how are things different now? And lastly, would your relationship be different now?
You should also speak to him. You say that he’s gotten into a lot of trouble since you went out, are you the cause of it? What caused him to do what he did? If you guys are still away from each other, do you want to try and/or go through that again? And how much have you guys changed? Be open and practice good communication skills.
He may not be the same person you knew before, but what are the reasons you fell for him? Maybe that hasn’t changed. You should also keep in mind that you guys are older now, that may be a factor to the change.
Most importantly, you need to ask him, why is he contacting you after so long. He may want to get back together, but is it for the right reasons or wrong?
Like I said, there will never be a definite answer to dating getting back with an ex. Even singer Sevyn Streeter has this problem. In her song nEXT, she says “How can my ex be my next boyfriend?’
So far, all sources say the same thing. Ask yourself these questions, and figure out the answers. Don’t let the decision be only be yours though, whether you get back together. If that is what he wants, then he may try to sway your choice, but include him in these questions too. You may be able to figure out what you really want together.
On Tuesday, February 9, 2016, Norwalk Public Schools district did not announced a delay or a school closing. The roads that morning were not in any condition to be driven on.
Every other school district in Connecticut that morning had announced delays due to the roads and not wanting any of their students to get hurt. Knowing how many high school students drive to school, they should have called a delay. They should have realized that the roads were just not in good condition. Even the parents were unhappy with this decision to send their children to school with the roads being unsafe.
For Norwalk, there’s supposedly a lot of research to decide whether we have delays or early dismissals. They talk to meteorologists and check weather updates. The Department of Public Works says if roads are ready and if school parking lots and driveways are ready. Decisions for the district are made by 5:30 am.
Knowing this, the DPW should have done a better job at making their decision more accurate. Many roads weren’t even plowed for two days. A teacher who chose to remain anonymous admitted that the BMHS parking lot was not ready and there should have been a delay. She went on and stated that though it may have been a few inches,it still counts as something.
On DPW’s website, it states snow removal costs 5,000 dollars per hour, and removing snow takes up to 16-24 hours after a storm. They remove snow from main streets, steep hills, and difficult intersections first. Side streets and dead end streets are done last, if main streets doesn’t require more attention.

With President Obama’s term coming to a close there has been a surge of news surrounding the big election in the fall of 2016. Candidates are being announced, debates are being held, and most importantly the senior class is preparing to vote for the first time. In November, most this year’s seniors will have just turned 18 making them adults and enabling them to have a voice in choosing the next president. However, with great freedom comes great responsibility.
Voting for president is a right of passage being a citizen of the United States, but unfortunately people don’t realize how serious it is. Growing up we begin to hear about politics from our parents so naturally we follow their political views without taking the time to formulate our own opinions. As the senior class turns 18 I think it's important that they pay attention to what's going on politically and take the time to think about what they believe is beneficial for our country.
According to the results of a survey done by the Gallup Youth organization 21% of high school students say their political views are more liberal than their parents, 7% say they are more conservative, and 71% say that their views mirror those of their parents. At Brien McMahon High School those statistics seem to match up pretty well.
Senior Eli Felber is a perfect example of a student that formulates his own opinions about politics as opposed to just following in his parents. “I keep my political views as objective as possible...” , Eli says, “...not buying into the popular opinion when it comes to politics is something that’s important to me and I’ll often find myself questioning other people’s views and why they have them.”
As we get closer and closer to an election of a new president young voters need to be more politically aware to ensure the best candidate gets the job.

What do Americans spend on Vday?
Americans spent 18.9 - 19 billion dollars for Valentine’s day gifts last year, according to US News. The average male spends at least 200 dollars on gifts while females spend at least 100, more or less.
When it comes to this holiday, men spend a lot more. But where is all this money going?
Besides the usual candy and flowers, stores. Last year, 44 percent of women went to discount stores, and more than 37 percent of men went to department stores.
All this shopping and spending isn’t just for loved ones though, some gifts are for the furry friend in the family , school mates, teachers, or coworkers.
I don’t know about you, but I always thought men spent more on candy. But surprisingly, its women. 55 % of females bought candy last year compared to the 52% of men who did. What isn’t shocking is the 61% of men who bought flowers.
So what should you buy for him or her?
Based on the facts above, do something different. Buy something from a store and be original. Yes, women love flowers and candy( I asked for the same), but I also wanted something new. Go out and see a movie or dinner. You could always add something sweet to the mix, just be different. Instead of the usual (unless requested), think outside the box this year.
You exit your previous class and enter the hallways of Brien McMahon as you attempt to avoid couples trying to give each other mouth to mouth CPR, people moving at the equivalent of a hare and tortoise race, and much more all in a 2 minute walk to your next class.
