Anybody who went to Brien McMahon High school Prior to the 2016 - 2017 school year knew that if you're hungry through the day you could count on one of the several vending machines in the school to get snacks. But for returning students this year, they were in for a big surprise.
Not only were classes extended to this new schedule and lunch time reduced. Mr.Q (the housemaster) said that “Over the summer all of the vending machines had been removed”. Many returning students discovered this on the first day, but some believed the machines were just being marinated and would be back. It wasn't until about week into school where students began to ask what happened to the machines. The general thought amongst staff and students was that there was a contract dispute.
Now this is somewhat true the vending machines were removed because of an issue between the vendors and the school but Ms.Koroshetz the principal of Brien McMahon High School reports that “ the vending machines were removed because me and the rest of the school staff felt that the machines were a distraction to learning”. She says this was the main reason they were removed because she stated that“ last year many staff complained that students would leave class saying they were going one place and end up at the vending machines”.
This she said also caused a lot of hallway disruptions especially at the machines near classrooms. Now the school does realize that many kids really on snacks throughout the day so the school is working with class advisors to work out a system to open the school store.
Now the school store would only be open during non lunch hours but Ms. Koroshetz said that this would take some times so she had some suggestions for the mean time. Her first suggestion was to bring snacks from home. This would actually be cheaper than buying snacks at school.
If you did not have time to pack snack she suggested to grab snack from the breakfast cart in the morning in the lobby. Her final suggestion was to make sure you eat lunch and maybe grab a snack and save it for later. Hopefully these tips will help get through your day less hungry.
