I believe climate change is by far the most important issue of our time. The world has been here for 4.5 billion years but it is only in the past 100 years that we have caused such a significant amount of damage. Due to the burning of fossil fuels, we have pumped carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, which has created an issue called Global Warming. This problem is real, and it is happening right in front of our eyes.
The Great Barrier Reef, the world’s largest ecosystem, is slowly dying due to rising water temperature killing the coral. This is happening to reefs all around the world. The increasing number of droughts will continue getting longer and more extreme, because temperatures rise due to global climate change, more moisture evaporates from land and water, leaving less water behind. Sea levels are rising as well, threatening the lives of billions.
The global mean sea level has been rising, meaning there will come a point where cities like New York City will be submerged. Climate change such as rising sea levels and drought will cause mass migration, which is very dangerous. Climate Change will affect all of us in the future, yet majority of the people aren’t thinking about it now.
Andres Arbelaez (18) said about the subject, “I don’t think climate change is a real issue that will actually affect us. However I do think there are many things we are doing that have an impact on the environment like cars, airplanes and other things that produce exhaust. But I’m not going to worry about climate change because it will not affect me in my lifetime”. It’s probably true that climate change won’t have a significant impact on us during our lifetime, however there will be small noticeable changes like warmer weather, higher sea level, and many other things.
Another student, Michael Claps (17), said ”Climate Change is something we all need to be aware about and should be doing something about. It’s something that will destroy the world if we don’t do something about it”. So as we can see people have very different views on the topic, but this is a real issue and something needs to be done.
