Helping and protecting students has been his number one priority throughout his career, but no one knows what he has been through to become the person he is now. Security guard Derek Sellers’ world outside his job is wrought with bumps in an ever-changing road.
At twelve years old, he began his first job working at an art building. He would clean, dust and throw out office waste. After attending Norwalk High and graduating in 1995, Sellers had no idea what career he wanted to pursue. He was undecided: deciding whether he wanted to become a social worker or to get involved with television. He then thought of something that was completely different from the careers he had chosen.
Working as a security guard means that one will struggle and have a life full of making decisions. But for Sellers, working as a security guard seems to be a job with no regrets. His security career started in 2004 when he did an internship at Norwalk High School for two to three months. He then transferred to Roton Middle school where he stayed for eleven years. Four years ago, Sellers came to Brien McMahon and plans on staying for as long as he can. He loves his job and strives to become better every day. He goes to professional development classes with the other security guards to improve their skills and communicate the new things that are around them.
“I love being around students and I love wanting to help and help be a change in their lives so they can be better and grow as they get more mature.”
At the age of twenty-two, Sellers met his wife, Latasha Sellers, who was twenty-eight. They met at a Pre-Valentines party when his cousin introduced her to him and they hit it off. He asked her if she wanted to dance and danced for the rest of the night. “As I was leaving, she asked me to come back and took out a pen and a paper, (This was back in the days where we would use pen and paper) and not only wrote her cell phone number but her home number and her job number. I decided to call her and went on a couple of dates, I didn’t want to be in a relationship but she was different, she was mature, she cared so much about herself and was not into materialistic things. After a couple of dates, I finally met her son and bonded with him,” says Sellers. They have been married for twenty years, but it hasn’t always been easy. Derek now has a beautiful family who supports and loves him.
