Movies are for everyone and Valentine’s Day has plenty of films that work for both couples and those who are single. With Valentine’s Day’s hype always lingering after the day itself and the weekend coming up, everyone needs something to do to entertain themselves. Yet not everyone has a significant other to celebrate this day with and still needs something to do this weekend by themselves. So why not close the gap between the two with something both sides can do during the holiday: watch a movie.
The love holiday is always used as a time for movie companies to toss out their new “sensational” movie featuring two people falling in love. Most couples truly aren’t up for some sappy thing unless they’re up for making fun of it and many people enjoy critiquing movies on their own as well. If you fit into the category of making fun of movies, then check out the 50 Shades of Grey movies. Both the first one and the newly released sequel were completely slammed by critics for being unsatisfying and just plain out bad, Rotten Tomatoes giving it a 25%. All those who view this will get a kick out of the awful acting, dialogue, pacing, and writing of the film and will find it more of a comedy than a romance.
If you’re looking for a good romantic-esque film to watch, then look towards an often overlooked film: Scott Pilgrim vs. The World. The film goes against your stereotypical romantic-comedy films and adds in a lot of the gaming culture, it is from the point of view of a 22 year old geeky guy, and gives a new twist you just don’t see much of today. After gaining great reviews from critics, an 81% on Rotten Tomatoes, this fast paced film holds a lot of new humor that anyone, whether single or together, can enjoy.
Lastly, a film that came out last Valentine’s Day, this rewatchable and sure to be Marvel classic is one that will satisfy anyone who watches it. Deadpool first came out last year on Valentine’s Day and surely enough, it is an amazing blend of comedy, unconventional romance, and great action scenes that will draw in any fan of the Marvel franchise or anyone who enjoys a good film. The romance between Wade and Vanessa feels completely genuine as you see it from their first meeting at Wade’s frequently visited bar. All the action, fourth-wall breaking, and comedy is built around this whole film which, to put it simply, is a love story that goes against all the tropes. Deadpool is a film that anyone, unless you have a weak-stomach or a clean mind, can enjoy.
In the end, every person who views these films will know they got their money’s worth. Whether it be from the comedy, action, or the love story at the core, you can enjoy it with ease. So sit down, turn on Netflix or open up the DVD player and enjoy all that chocolate you bought.
