They think that once you turn 16, you will now be hired at any place especially fast food spots. Some teenagers get a job just so they can have some spending money, and get a feel of what it's like to be in the work field. Whereas others have no choice. Like one of our classmates Brandon Miles.
Once Brandon turned 16, already working at an after school program as a mentor, he saved every penny he earned in order to buy his own phone, food/beverages, and clothes. You’re probably wondering well why couldn’t his mom/dad help with buying those things. “ I have to make it on my own, I wasn’t given the essentials that every teenager is given, my mom treated me as an adult and that's how I live to be,” he explained. Due to family issues Brandon relocated to Florida where he left behind all of his friends, and even a great paying job. Now back to finish off his senior year, Brandon currently has 3 jobs.
Interview with Brandon Miles Class of ‘17:
Tamia: How was it finding a new job once you came back from Florida?
Brandon: “It wasn’t easy because most places weren’t looking for people and plus it was a slow season, which made it worse. So I just kept on looking everyday for posts on websites like Snagajob or Indeed , and some places had help wanted. But when I would fill out the application they would say we already have enough employees even though the post was still on the website, and that would just get me mad.”
Tamia: When you went to Florida, what made them give up your spot?
Brandon: “I went to Florida and informed them that I wouldn't be back until summer. Then change of plans I come back early. I explained to them the situation and how I could work now. But they told me oh we gave your hours away.”
Tamia: How did you feel when they offered your job back and do you work anywhere else ?
Brandon: “ I’m rich! No it feels good. I currently work at Sky Zone, The Norwalk Inn, and Stew Leonard's.”
Tamia: How did the interviews go with them, do you have confidence in your interview skills ?
Brandon: “Since I already worked at Stew Leonard's they didn’t really need to interview me again, the Norwalk Inn automatically hired me because I knew someone who worked there, and Sky Zone they interviewed me. For me Sky Zone’s interview’s are very easy they just ask general questions, about your skills with kids and just get to know you. Also since I’m always looking for jobs I have to educate myself on speaking proper and coming off as smart, because that's the only way to get hired.”
Tamia: Would you say that working three jobs is stressful ?
Brandon: “ Yes but I’m ready for it, I will be hanging out less, growing up, and becoming the young adult I am. Which is what most kids need to do and will soon be doing.”
Tamia: Being a senior do you feel like that gives you a lot of leeway, meaning you feel like working is easier ?
Brandon: “I feel like school isn’t always a number one priority to me as it is towards others. I try to work on myself, I feel like school revolves around drama ,and that's something I don’t interact with . I try to worry about my future, because once you get out of this High School you're going to have to make it all on your own.”
Tamia: Now you are already set with all the jobs you have , what can you say to students your age or younger that are struggling with finding a job right now ?
Brandon: “Just keep on trying, because if you give up then you're not gonna get it. For example my cousin was holding on to an application, and every time she would say I’ll bring it to them later. But never would and that just shows you how much she really needed a job…she didn’t ? So really just keep looking and be patient, one will come your way like three came mine.”
