It was February 28th when I received the good news. A Wednesday, and it was exactly two weeks before my eighteenth birthday. I was refreshing my emails on my phone and noticed an email from NBC. When I clicked on it, it confirmed that I, after four months of effort, had received tickets to see Jimmy Fallon live on The Tonight Show.
For years, Jimmy Fallon has been one of my favorite celebrities so I decided to try and get tickets. Tickets are free, however the trick is you need to get your name on a waiting list and then its up to the people at NBC to decide if they want to give them to you or not. For four months, I had been consistently disappointed.
Fast forward to March 14th at 3 in the afternoon. I am waiting in line with my two best friends. I am jumping in my place as we wait to go through security and get our wristbands. Keep in mind, the tickets are completely free and I get to see Jimmy live in person.
Everything was a blur until I sat down in my seat which to my luck was not far from the stage at all. Three rows up and in the center; it doesn’t get much better than that.
We continue to wait in anticipation for the show to start. First, comes out a man whose sole purpose is to hype up the crowd. Then, the band proceeded to their instruments and microphones. The only person left to come out was Fallon himself. The music played, the ‘applause’ sign came on and all of a sudden it was him, right in front of me.
Immediately he starts the show, making jokes and doing impressions. The show was just as I had imagined, filled with comedy and games and stories. Alicia Vikander and Jim Sturgess were the two guests who Jimmy made do archery and juggle, respectively. It was all a big laugh and it felt like I was living inside the show.
Then something surprising happened. A commercial break came on and Jimmy walked into the audience. Mind you, my seats were close to the isle and he was incredibly close. I was utterly starstruck. He begins to speak to the whole audience and the audience starts talking back. As he starts to glance over towards my direction, my friends start to point and scream at me, a way to get Jimmy’s attention and tell him it was my birthday.
And this is something I will never forget: Jimmy looks at me and in front of the entire audience wishes me a happy birthday.
For the rest of the night I couldn’t stop smiling. Not only had I gone to The Tonight Show on my birthday with my best friends, I actually talked to Jimmy Fallon himself. And the best part is, I didn’t have to spend a dime.
