2016 to some has been the year of the Joker and Harley Quinn. The hype of the most highly anticipated film Suicide Squad which was released in August, is about the most dangerous and popular villains in the D.C (detective comics) comic book universe and how they are recruited to become super heroes after the Enchantress takes over. But the two characters that everyone is talking about are the Joker and Harley Quinn.
These two have been pop culture icons for years, but recently people have been talking about how they’re being portrayed in Suicide Squad. Some fans of the king and queen of crime are upset that their relationship is too romantic. In the comics and the Batman Animated Series, the couple is portrayed as an abusive relationship. The Joker is seen hurting Harley physically and emotionally many times throughout the movie. ‘Warner Bros and director of Suicide Squad David Ayer decided not to portray the relationship as toxic, instead the Joker goes to great lengths to rescue Harley from prison and show his love for her.
Margot Robbie who played Harley Quinn in the film has called the relationship “toxic” and when asked if she would tell Harley to leave Joker she said yes; she can find a better love somewhere else.
Since the film was released, BMHS has become obsessed with these two mentally ill people in an abusive relationship. Meghan (‘18) stated that, “People at BMHS love them because they are a bad a** couple”. She went on to say, “I don’t think they’re glamorizing mental illness and dating abuse at all. I think it’s a great film. I loved it”. .
Khatrina (‘17) stated that “she thinks the characters are in fact glamorizing mental illness and dating abuse’.
Whether you like them or not the Joker and Harley Quinn will be around for many, many more years, especially since Warner Bros has rumored a Harley Quinn Suicide Squad film.
