Being a high school student comes with the definite feeling of stress. Jamye Calderon (‘19) says that stress can cause her to always feel tired. Alongside feeling tired, students like Jazz Roches feel like school pressures can cause them to often feel unmotivated. “When i’m stressed, I feel like I can’t accomplish anything,” says Jazz. Like Jazz, students around the country feel like stress is taking control of their life.
A recent poll conducted by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Harvard School of Public Health concluded that most of the stress on teens is caused by school and academics rather than bullying or social issues. According to NPR.org, the polls and surverys proved that students were mostly stressed out because of homework. “Homework was a leading cause of stress, with 24 percent of parents saying it's an issue.”
Thankfully, to help relieve stress, the Apple Store and Google Playstore have a great variety of different apps that you could use on a daily basis or whenever you feel like stress is getting the best of you. There are apps ranging from a 10 minute session of mindfulness relaxtion to digitally coloring in an adult coloring book.
Headspace is an app that primilarly focuses on mindfulness. Mindfulness is the idea of the mind being fully present in the moment rather than focusing on the past or future events. The purpose is so that you won’t feel overwhelmed.
This app consists of Andy Puddicombe, founder, speaking to you in a very soothing voice through a series of 10 minute 10 day sessions of mind cleansing. As Puddicombe would say, “all you need to do is to sit back, relax and allow your body a mind to unwind.”
Headspace only takes 10 minutes of your busy schedule. This app is also accessible anywhere and at any time. Whether you’re at school, at home, out on vacation or whenever you feel like you need a moment to yourself, you can always take out your set of headphones and open up the app.
Here’s a quick video on the app’s purpose and how it works:

2.Colorfy: Coloring Book for Adults
Coloring is not just for kids! While using this app, you have a variety of templates to choose from, ranging from flowers to animals. Rather than carrying around a coloring book everywhere you go, you can use this app that is accesible everytime of the day.
Stressed out student, Jazz Roches, took the time to try out this app. When using it, she constantly said that she felt more relaxed and felt good. “I feel really concentrated,” she quickly added as she used her pointer finger to select a shade of blue for the sky.
What makes this app different from Headspace is that it can take less than 10 minutes or more than 10 minutes depending on how much free time you have. It can also be enjoyed in complete silence or with music, whereas Headspace is best enjoyed in a more peaceful scenery.
How it would benefit a student:
Coloring is a great way to relieve stress. How is it relieving exactly? Lacy Mucklow, an art therapist explained that some people actually find coloring to be soothing. "It's good for us to be quiet and still and focused on just one thing for once," she tells USA Today. Coloring allows one to tune out the world and focus on the moment which could be beneficial when juggling a whole lot of problems at once.
If these don’t suit you, there’s always other options. But it’s always good to try something new in ways that could benefit your health even if meditating or using a coloring app is out of your comfort zone.
