In the halls of McMahon, you can hear students talking about the 2019 musical and rumors are starting to spread about what it might be. To end the rumors, I talked to Mr. Arcari.
This March, McMahon students will be showing off their talent in McMahon’s drama production. “The top options are Fiddler on the Roof, Guys and Dolls, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Mary Poppins, High School Musical and Mama Mia.” Acari Stated.
Arcari stated that he applied for the rights to perform Mamma Mia which is a process that can often take a long time and leave a lot of suspense. He heard back and got a no. A theater company is touring the show and doesn’t want competition. He repealed this and is still waiting to hear back. If he can get the rights, then he said he would probably do this show.
As much as he loves Mary Poppins, he is hesitant to do it because the two leads need to be children. This can be hard because he would have to find two kids from outside the school. He would probably choose middle schoolers. Because he doesn’t know any middle schoolers who would be good for the part, this process could be extra work and time. He doesn’t want leads of the show to be kids who don’t go to McMahon, he wants the leads to be students from McMahon.
This leaves Fiddler on the Roof, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and Guys and Dolls. He says these are all great and would be happy doing any of them.
For the first time, the drama department has received funding from Mr. Hurwitz. This will allow more opportunities for the show to make it the best it can be. Putting on a show can cost a lot of money and the show often loses money instead of making a profit. He said the amount they are receiving will be a good start to making the musical better.
Arcari has a lot of goals for this year's production. He said “I want to teach students and the community of Brien McMahon about music and theater.” He also wants to sell out the auditorium. This can be hard to achieve, but if you work hard at promoting it and getting students to go, it can be achieved.
He wants to make the play a big thing at McMahon. He wants to showcase the students talent. “When students do something musically it’s not just good, it’s great.”
