On November 4th 2016 i turned 17 years old and my parents surprised me with tickets to Disney's Aladdin on broadway. Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie and I have been wanting to see the broadway show since its debut in 2014, so I was thrilled to be able to go.
The minute i walked inside the historic New Amsterdam theater in New york City i was greeted by fabulous Disney cast members who ushered us to the elevator to go to the balcony floor where my family and i were sitting.
The orchestra started to tune and the lights began to dim, it was showtime!.
The shows opening number, ‘Arabian Nights,’ started off with Tony award winner James Monroe Iglehart as the Genie narrating the story. The stage then lit up with lights and the ensemble walked on sang the classic song ‘Arabian Nights’ from the film, In just the first 6 minutes of the show I was in awe over the costumes, choreography and sets. The marketplace scene in the first act really showed the audience who Aladdin really is, It showed he isn't just a street rat thief, instead showed that he is a good person. My mother and i during ‘One Jump Ahead’ whispered to each other that we both thought that Addam sounded just like Aladdin in the movie. But the song that really made me love Adam Jacob's performance was ‘Proud of your Boy’ which was written for the original 1992 film but was later cut, this song was about Aladdin telling his mother that he was going to make her proud someday.
Courtney Reed's performance as Princess Jasmine was amazing as well, especially during her solo song ‘These Palace Walls’. The song is about Jasmine wanting to explore the world but shes not allowed to leave the palace so she sings this song as she decides to run away from home. The song was cut from the film but Alan Menken a Disney legend and composer of many classic Disney films including Aladdin, brought these cut songs back for the stage show.
Jonathan Freeman who portrayed the villain Jafar in the 1992 film also portrayed Jafar at the Broadway show. This made his performance so amazing because every word he said or sang sounded just like Jafar. Especially in the newly written song ‘Diamond in the Rough’ which is about Jafar and Iago tricking Aladdin (who is the diamond in the rough) into fetching Jafar the Genie lamp in the cave of wonders.
James Monroe Iglehart portrayal of the Genie was fabulous in every way. In the show during ‘Friend like Me’ the Genie is showing Aladdin all the possibilities of his 3 wishes there was confetti, tap dancing, lots of energy and the lyrics everyone knows and loves from the film and it was the biggest number in the show. In no way was James trying to be just like the late Robin Williams (Genie in 1992 film) he truly made the genie his own while still saying original lines from the film.
‘A whole new World’ was my favorite part of the show it was truly magical when Jasmine and Aladdin rode the carpet in the night sky. Another song i really enjoyed was ‘High Adventure’ which was about Aladdins best friends Omar, Kassim and Babkak going on a mission to rescue Aladdin from jail, the song had sword fights and a catchy chorus.
Overall the show was amazing and i highly recommend it, i even got to meet the cast after the show. I told Courtney Reed that Jasmine is my favorite Princess and she told me that “Jasmine is my favorite princess too”, She also loved my Jasmine phone case and shirt. I also got to speak to James Monroe Iglehart after the show and he told me that “Aladdin is my favorite Disney movie too” and told me that he started to get into theater in high school. Adam Jacobs told me that he loved my shirt and thanked me for coming to the show.

They are the most successful boy band since The Beatles. Selling out arenas and stadiums in just minutes. With over 50 million albums sold worldwide, you'd think that they would stay together for a long time, but after six years, the band may be calling it quits. They are One Direction.
One Direction has been together for 6 years and have released an album every year since their debut. But fans of the boys were shocked and quite worried when they announced that they were going to take 2016 off. Fans feared that 1D were breaking up for good. However this isn't the first time fans feared a breakup; the first time was in 2014 when Zayn Malik left the band in order to live like a “normal 22 year old”. Despite his claims Zayn's life has been nothing but normal since the split he has released a solo album in March 2016 called ‘Mind of Mine” which was both a hit in the states and in the U.K, but since the split Zayn hasn't been close with his old bandmates and has even broken off his engagement to Perrie Edwards (member of the british girl group, Little Mix).
The next possible member to leave the group is Niall Horan. In September of this year Niall surprised fans by announcing his new record deal. He recently released his first solo single entitled “ This Town”. Fans love his new hit, but were worried that Niall was leaving the group just like Zayn did,but Niall has reassured fans by saying that “A One Direction reunion is in the future and there will be lots more 1D shows”. This has made millions of One Direction fans very hopeful that the band will be making more music together soon. Niall has also teased that he will be recording his album this month and hopes to release it Summer (2017). He will be on the Jingle Ball 2016 tour this winter, doing a total of 6 shows including one in New York City on December 9th.
As for the other boys, One Direction member Liam Payne is currently working on solo music, but is not leaving One Direction anytime soon. Harry Styles is currently pursuing acting and his first film called ‘Dunkirk’ which takes place during World War 2 is scheduled to be released in 2017. Louis Tomlinson is not working on music or movies, he is too busy being a devoted father to his son Freddie. For the time being, One Direction is still together and as strong as ever.

1. You can smell your room down the hall -- because of old food or old laundry.
- Turn on some energetic music… or anything that floats your boat. Not everyone is into that stuff. Believe it or not, that one song that makes you want to get up and dance will lead you to cleaning in any minute.
- Open the blinds, curtains, and windows for some fresh air and light! This will make smell in the bedroom go away and the light will reflect on the room to make it look more inviting.
- If you have a favorite candle light that as well.
Kerrin Massey explains her reason for not being able to clean her room, she said , “No I never have time to make my bed , because I always sleep past my alarm. Also when I wake up I do what is important, so getting ready for school.”
Anthony Brunetto also says no, “I eat breakfast, brush my teeth, and get ready for school.” In his opinion school comes first before taking care of his living area .
One of McMahon’s main goals is to make sure students are ready to go to college. Are they sure that every student wants that?
When college is in the equation of a student’s life, they tend to lean towards 3 specific reasons why:
- They are expected to continue their studies.
- They have found out a way to pursue their dream career through college.
- The major that they chose to go after is to guarantee a potential steady financial future.
Now, whenever someone says one of these 3 reasons, other perspectives come into the equation. A main question that pops up is, what about the rest of us?
Who are the rest of us? Believe it or not, there are few of us who aren’t as knowledgeable about the benefits of college compared to others. It could be as simple as not knowing how to sign up for scholarships, to not understanding the factor that there are more options than college for a happy life.
If we were to gather some concerns from the students and staff here at McMahon, it would mainly circle around the base of knowledge. As expressed in the video above, there are many visionaries, but there isn’t enough attention treated to all of them.
Finances aren’t the best either. School is expensive, even if you currently go for free. But we can’t keep on putting the blame on whoever we want.
But before we go ahead and try to fix every little problem, we have to remember that high school does not define your life. So if you’re stressing about any little aspect, remember the reason why. If you want to go into the arts, go ahead and stress about that one solo piece. Sports? Work on inner and physical strength. Academics are just as important- or at least will be if you have a strong foundation. (I’m not an expert myself, so I can’t waste your time telling you what to do.)
For the student reading this at McMahon or honestly any student in general, remember: we are the beginning to something new. We are a diverse school, and that can apply to all aspects. We need to work on at least addressing all the different talents in this school. We’re not saying Academics aren’t important, because everyone can benefit from them. It’s about balance.
It always starts with you. Believe it or not, there are at 86% of college graduates in the US that still don’t have a steady career. You’re not alone. Realize what you want out of your future and focus on that first.
Remember that college isn’t for everyone. Don’t waste two years at NCC only to end up at Walmart as a dropout and thinking that you’re a failure. Don’t just go to NCC either just because it’s the cheaper option.
You’ve gotta plan ahead. This can’t be stressed enough. Know your limits as well. If you didn’t do the best grade wise for the past two years for example, it might not be the wisest to apply to only Ivy Leagues.
These are just some things to think about, because who am I to determine your future? I’m still trying to figure out my own.
Let me be cliche one more time: don’t give up on yourself.
The 2000’s, the era of technology, and for many teens and young adults, video games are the best kind of technology to date. This past Friday, Call Of Duty Infinite Warfare was released. This remastered version of one of the most popular games has taken the world by storm.
COD: Infinite Warfare was created by the classic COD developers, Infinity Ward. The previous game, Call Of Duty: Ghosts, was mostly known as being a complete failure. So, once the trailer for Infinite Warfare was released to the public, most wrote it off immediately as terrible. However, curiosity of course got the best of the world, and so, despite assumptions of the game being potentially awful, hundreds preordered the game.
The game surprised a lot of people, earning a 8/10 on GameSpot. The most praise was for Modern Warfare remastered. This game was released with the Infinite warfare as sort of a double gameplay, given it's a hefty total of $80 rather than just $60. Considering each game is typically $60, thats a great deal.
The biggest issue most COD lovers tend to face is the fact it's all futuristic themed. Most people crave the realistic war scene when buying these shooter games. That's where Modern Warfare Remastered comes in.
They gave the fans something quite special for those who don’t exactly want to play a futuristic shooter. The remastered is seen as based on the early 2000’s, giving a more realistic feel. This remastered version was highly anticipated, and did not leave the fans disappointed.
Most teens hate school and have trouble getting up in the morning. Our parents think we are just being lazy and do not want to attend school when there are deeper reasons that are overlooked. Here are the top 5 reasons:
- Dreading Homework
Students at McMahon also fear doing it wrong. Do you ever feel confident about a new unit being taught in class, and then go home to pull out your homework and you’re like “okay, what the actual frick is this?”,yeah, that’s me too. And sometimes, they never get that “A for effort”.
Bullying comes in all forms, we all know this. The top reason why kids are bullied, is because they do not ‘fit” into society’s standards. Every word that is said to a student is carried around by them forever being that high school is when a kid is at their most vulnerable state. Students even remember the things said about them years later and it can get in the way of being successful. Also, teachers seem to ignore the bullying that takes place right in front of them or they don’t do anything once bullying is reported to them. This leaves the student feeling like no one is on his/her side or supports them. “You gotta deal with people. Some people get bullied, like me. Mostly in middle school. I try to get over it because you gotta live life and being bullied shouldn’t be an issue when you’re worried about your education.” (Tamia Holland (‘17) when asked why she doesn’t look forward to school).
School is especially boring for teens. Students usually have really fun interests outside of school. The school material just doesn't cut it for being fun, interesting, and worthy of our attention. Most students at McMahon complain saying there is no space for discussion on real life events and research.s
4. Finding something to wear is a drag
“I don’t feel like picking out an outfit.” (Aaliyah Grasty (‘17) when asked why she doesn’t look forward to getting up for school). “Then I have to do my hair, and I never know what to do to my hair. Sometimes I don’t feel like getting dressed so I put on sweatpants.”
5. We HATE getting up for school!!
A lot of students at McMahon are “early birds” but not when it comes to school. In fact, most students prefer getting up at 6am on the weekends rather than during the week. “I can actually do things I want to do and get accomplished for the day on the weekend. I enjoy the crisp morning air while going to places that I actually want to be at… not locked in a crowded building with a bunch of people I don't mess with.” (Midland Lenard (‘17))
Since Europeans stepped foot on the new land of America, there have been countless conflicts between them and the natives who had inhabited the land for decades prior to their arrival. Governments constantly taking their land and rights, battles erupting over centuries that ended in bloodshed, and natives being forced to assimilate to the new culture of the Europeans that now dominated what was once their home.
Now this conflict has arisen again with the creation of the Dakota Access Pipeline that is cutting through Native American land that goes across the Missouri River. The native Sioux tribe that lives in the area have risen up in protest against this construction and sued the federal regulators as they felt they were not consulted about the construction. Currently they’re trying to peacefully protest by camping out on the land to prevent any more work on the pipeline.
The pipeline stretches 1,172 miles through the states of North and South Dakota, Iowa, and Illinois. The government has claimed that this pipeline will help create more jobs and the economy as a whole as it will make bringing oil over to America cheaper and less dependent on other countries. But the tribe fears it will impact their native and sacred land while also contaminating drinking water. With more than 200 tribes standing up to help protect the Sioux’s land, there is strong competition on either side.
Over the months that the protests have gone on, the protesters have been attacked with pepper spray and dogs from the private security after the company bulldozed sacred land and destroyed it completely. The work has resumed around the area of natives and protesters overall and multiple celebrities have taken a stand, demanding that they stop construction of the pipeline and keep it off of native land.
As of now, the pipeline is still being worked on and the protesters are still hoping for some way of winning in their case against the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers or to have the government stop or delay construction. Their last hope is that they end up reconstructing it around their land to keep it off of their territory and to keep their area safe from possible environmental harm. For now, all the protesters are remaining strong and standing their ground on the territory in hopes that remaining peaceful will earn them a win in the end.
Every day you pass down the halls, constantly hearing students groan about their next class and how much they’d rather be home doing something else with their friends. Or there are the kids at the edge of the halls that are silent and just want this school day to be over so they don’t have to deal with everyone there once again. In comes in the solution that was proposed not too long ago. Climate Day. The day where there are no classes, activities galore, and a chance to socialize with old friends and new throughout the day.
The day started out as just a simple anti-bullying day for BMHS to continue its unique string of taking on challenges in a new way. On this day, each kid is allowed to choose three areas of activity and take part in one during each block. These range from cooking Halloween treats all the way to experimenting with various scientific materials. At the end of the day, the whole school gathers outside for a pep rally.
Kerrin Massey, a senior at the school, has said she finds the day worth trying and that it really is a fun day for students to try new things. “I feel like it’s a day of just...you get to relax and have fun. Share each other’s thoughts and ideas and just help each other out.” She says when describing what she thinks of the day.
Teachers on the other hand have a different view. Mrs. McAndrew, a world history teacher at the school, has worked on the committee for Climate Day this year. She too sees this day as a positive thing for students and teachers alike. “We started a School Climate Day as a way for students to contribute positively to our school climate, meet new teachers, and meet new students.” She says. “We also believe it is important to show that as a school, we can relax and focus on building relationships- not just academics.”
While it has only been around for a mere four years, Climate Day is slowly coming along with becoming its own tradition at BMHS. Future generations who will attend this school will have this day to look forward to while the school continually tries to perfect this day to make it the best it can be and spreading its anti-bullying message through the minds of all those who enter.
You would think this article would be about music or a really late feature on Macklemore’s “Thriftshop”, which makes sense since you are reading a piece in the entertainment section, but that’s not what this is about. It’s hard coming up with titles, alright?
Instead, let’s talk about fashion. No, this isn't another piece on the top trends in McMahon, but more so where they come from. Originally I wanted to do a piece on how your style correlates towards your attitude in school, but while I went around asking people questions that pertained to that topic, I found out some very interesting style choices and opinions from students at McMahon.
If you had to name the top 5 stores in the mall that students from our school typically shop at, surprisingly you’d get 5 different stores than from the person sitting next to you. I interviewed Sydney Waterhouse (‘19) and Deyanah Von (‘18). Sydney typically shops at Forever 21, because “it makes the outfit more mature as opposed to shopping at Justice when you were in middle school.”
Contradicting Sydney is Deyanah with her choice of shopping at Thrift Stores. Now you can see where the title comes from. Her reason for doing so was because she doesn’t normally have a budget for what she buys, if she “likes an item of clothing it’s going to be bought.”
Now normally and unfortunately, we live in a society where social ranks are connotated negatively because those of the “lesser” popularity are demoted through self-esteem. Deyanah agrees that the more money you spend on an outfit, the higher your social ranking. This is mainly associated with the factor that designer labels, since so commonly known, are casually talked about in the average dialect. However for Sydney, it’s how the outfit is paired together that really defines one’s attitude.
But one thing that is forgotten throughout all of this is that no matter who you are and where you come from, people are going to judge. A popular opinion is that people like to overthink their outfit a lot in this generation. Something that these two girls taught me while interviewing them is that there’s no difference where you buy your leggings from, they’re all going to be black in the end, aren’t they?
Weirdly enough, this helps explain in a lighter context that we’re all equal, but we’re not all the same. Here’s a reminder: take perspective into mind. It might help the next time you go clothes shopping for someone!
This is supposedly marking a new transition for The Weeknd, where as the cover art shows him with a new look , sadly the pineapple is gone. In his previous album (Beauty Behind The Madness) spawning his popular hits ‘Can't Feel My Face’ and ‘The Hills.’ Abel poses as what people label him to be, someone who does crazy drugs, haves many females, and is sensitive. But Abel doesn't let that settle with him, he calls out how others think about him, with slick song lyrics killing that thought in haters head’s.
Starboy will be the 3rd album not including his compilation album Trilogy. Do we think this album will do as well as Beauty Behind the Madness? Well as of now we can already see good is to come, the hair is gone which means a New Chapter, he already released a second single called False Alarm off of his new work, and now both singles have astonishing videos.
So will you be waiting for November 25th, because you know I will!
